The Cloak
The cloak of the Elling woman was an interesting find. It was the most common piece of clothing at the time worn by both women and men. These cloaks had a fur collar, and were usually worn two at a time with the first having the fur collar facing inwards and the second with the fur facing outwards. Due to the amazing preservation of the peat bog it could be seen that the cloak was made by incredibly fine stitching, this could only have been achieved by someone who had been trained. This suggests a trade and profession in the making of clothes. The cloak had also been repaired by rougher leather stitching as apposed to the original sinew stitching, it is thought that therefore this was done in the village or by the owner herself. The cloak was found on the body when it was discovered meaning that she was killed with it on and placed in the bog still wearing it.
Elling woman's legs were also wrapped in a skin blanket. Little is known about this item except that it was made from cowhide and that it was placed around her legs at the time of death.
