Significance of Condition and Location of the Body
Unlike many of the other bodies, something that was special about the condition of Elling woman's body was that it was in one piece. This is unique because many of the other bog bodies have been dismembered or with partially attached body parts. This is usually due to a form of torture and occurred as or before the time of death, this could be interpreted as punishment for their actions, suggesting they were in fact criminals. As the Elling woman was in one piece it could suggest a more sacrifice background to her death.
The location of the body was also significant in the fact that it was only 80m from where the Tollund man (another highly significant body) would be found 12 years later. This tells us that the bog was a place of many burials and sacrifices. This would have been because of its preservation qualities which had been known about and utilized by the people of the area and it continued to be used for many years after these two deaths.
The preservation of the hair was also crucial in the analysis of the Elling woman. It was so insightful as it was still in the formation it was at the time of death - a complex plait/pony tail tied in a knot. This was an intricate pattern than could only have been achieved so well by someone else doing it for her displaying to the examiners her higher class.
